It has been reported that over 50% of women with unperforated pyometra may be asymptomatic. 7 Combining multiple case reports for a total of 93 patients, only 15 (16.1%) patients with unperforated pyometra presented with abdominal pain, 2,4,8 as in our case. The most common complaint on presentation was vaginal bleeding or discharge, seen in 79During the years 2006–2007, 356 bitches of 92 different breeds were diagnosed with pyometra. The age range was one to 15 years (mean ± SD, 9 ± 1.4 years).
Often, a dog will develop a pyometra one to two months after their previous heat cycle. Dogs enter the diestrus stage after a heat cycle, which causes the hormone progesterone to increase. Progesterone causes the uterus lining to thicken.
Give Post-Surgical Antibiotics. Most veterinarians—at least 76 percent, according to some studies (2)—put their patients on post-surgical antibiotics after pyometra surgery. Dogs will sometimes develop infections at the incision site, but much more dangerous are those internal infections that we cannot see. XXpe2Rl. 48 8 288 228 96 195 390 256 240
